Clear communication and the understanding of concepts when working with your freestyle dog really opens the door to dancing and improvising in freestyle. Moving together ‘as one’ is not achieved with mere bevy of cued tricks. If a dog is taught spatial awareness and is able to apply a directional or positional skill from ‘anywhere’, we can go beyond teaching a move or position skill as a ‘trick’ and help them move towards understanding it as a ‘concept’ in space and time. With practice and patience it allows for dancing on the fly…much like a ballroom team that is on the dance floor having to make decisions and changes to where they are going and how they will interpret the music with steps, movement and flow. There is a leader and a follower to be sure, but the result is seamless and together, true dancing.
